When completed, the route will connect New England’s 2nd and 3rd largest cities, extending forty-eight miles from downtown Worcester, MA to India Point Park in Providence, RI. It will connect fifteen communities along the historic Blackstone River Valley and serve a population of over 1 million.

Project Timeline and Status

  • 1980’s – Conceptual Design/Feasibility Study

  • 1997-2008 – RIDEM and RIDOT began work on the first Rhode Island segment, from Lincoln to Valley Falls. Currently, 11.5 miles of the off-street bike path are open to the public in Rhode Island.

  • 2006 – MHD held the Grand Opening of 2.5 miles of Bikeway in Worcester/Millbury, MA

Three decades later, we need to push for the completion
of the Blackstone River Bikeway. Finishing the Bikeway is projected to take 7 years and cost approximately $31 million…

The Bikeway is being constructed thanks largely to the U.S. Department of Transportation Funding.

Partners include: 

  • Rhode Island Department of Transportation

  • Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management

  • Massachusetts Highway Department

  • Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation

  • John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor

And with support from communities and non-profits up and down the Blackstone Valley.
